Hiking in the Rockies is something every outdoor enthusiast should scratch off their bucket list. With its stoic mountains, raging rivers, and expansive alpine forests, it’s no surprise that Grand County is widely considered Colorado’s playground. One of the most enjoyable and cost-effective ways to immerse yourself in the natural beauty that exemplifies the Rocky Mountains, hiking presents a challenging adventure you won’t soon forget. In the heart of it all, Resort Management Group has a remarkable collection of rental properties with unfettered access to some of the best Rocky Mountain hiking trails on the continent. While it wouldn’t be hard to step outside your cabin or lodge and find a decent path, we want to help you maximize your Colorado vacation efforts. To assist in the journey, we put together three of our favorite Rocky Mountain hiking trails in Grand County, Colorado.

The Best Rocky Mountain Hiking Trails for a Colorado Vacation

Whether you are looking for a rugged excursion to test your endurance or a leisurely jaunt to witness some of the most breathtaking scenery on the planet, the Rocky Mountain hiking trails in Grand County are the perfect place for a trek. We’ve narrowed down three favorites to give you ideas on where to go and what to expect.

Monarch Lake

Monarch Lake Trail is a four-mile hike that sends visitors through dense canopy forests, trickling streams, and beside the lake’s shores. Although this trail is considered relatively easy, it is a popular destination for hiking in the Rockies due to its diversity and access to Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. It’s also widely regarded as one of the best places for canoeing and kayaking in Grand County.

Columbine Lake

Located within the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, the Columbine Lake Trail is just over seven miles and is rated to be moderately difficult. With a dynamic assortment of features including alpine hardwoods, mountain meadows, a stunning waterfall, and of course, Columbine Lake, this hike lends itself to a myriad of photo opportunities. Be sure to bring bug spray as some patrons have mentioned an abundance of mosquitoes near the lake during the peak of summer.

Byers Peak Trail

Given its awe-inspiring panoramas atop its apex, Byers Peak Trail is a challenging hike that rewards it’s contenders with sensational views. This nine-mile route features gorgeous wildflower terrain, false summits, and sharp vertical gains. Be prepared for a stiff wind at the pinnacle of the mountain that may warrant an extra layer if you want to stick around to take in the astonishing vistas. For many, this is an excellent representation of hiking in the Rockies.
